This dataset supports a strategy for improving bus service in the Washington region quickly and efficiently. The goal of the PCN is to improve bus service travel times, reliability, capacity, productivity and system access. The plan includes 24 corridors across the region and will impact half of all bus riders in the current Metrobus system. All WMATA GIS data is stored and exported in WMATA LDP NAD 1983 [NSRS2007] US Feet.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

The Bus Routes and Bus Patterns feature class contains all routes and patterns as defined by BPLN and BOSC as of the date of the last service change. Service changes happen quarterly and all bus-related GIS feature classes are current as of last effective date.
All attributes contained within the feature class were decided upon by WMATA stakeholders and deemed of significant enough business value to warrant inclusion in the dataset.
Routes are constructed from NavTEQ street segments supplemented with digitized segments for areas (from Bing imagery, but if not then site construction drawings (if available) and/or other data from DDOT, VDOT, MDOT) that NavTEQ does not have data. After all segments underlying the route are selected and attributed with the [ROUTEKEY] a topology check is performed to ensure there are no gaps or dangles. All segments are then merged and the resultant polyline is flipped to show the correct direction of travel. Manual checks are done to ensure that all road segments properly intersect (i.e. underpasses do not connect to overpasses).
The horizontal accuracy of the feature class is identical to that of the source data, NavTEQ Streets.
From NavTEQ: Roads and ferries cannot share geometry with railways, runways, country boundaries, or any water links. Additionally, Building/Landmark polygons which require sufficient detail to make the building recognizable, can never share geometry with navigable links. All other cartography may share geometry based on the generalization rules. For example, a road link or railroad link may also have a feature of state park or hospital. Cartography and administrative boundary features in Detailed City areas can be generalized up to 25 meters/82 feet (except built-up areas) and 100 meters/328 feet for built-up areas Cartography and administrative boundary features in Inter-Town areas can be generalized up to 250 meters/820 feet (except built-up areas) 100 meters/328 feet for built-up areas.
The routes and patterns contained within the feature class are current as of the effective date of the last signup period. No date field is maintained within the feature class. However, each signup is issued a unique number that can be used to trace its origin in time.
Every Regular (R) and Pattern (P) feature in the dataset was assigned the following attribute values based on input from WMATA’s Office of Bus Planning (BPLN) and Office of Bus Scheduling (BOSC) either from personal communication or published documents: [RT_D], [ROUTE], [DIRECTION], [ORIGIN], [DESTINATION], [DESCRIPTION], [REGIONAL], [EXPRESS], [M-F_SERVICE], [SAT_SERVICE], [SUN_SERVICE], [SCHOOL_SERVICE], [LINE], [SERVICE_TYPE], [ROUTEKEY]
[OBJECTID], [Shape], [SHAPE_LEN], [TYPE] are all GIS constructs.
As primary stakeholders in bus-related data, BOSC and BPLN have final say as to attribute accuracy and all input is treated as such.
